Fine Arts Fusion
Homeschool Classes
at the Sylvan House of Music
Have you ever wished your child could access a program that includes both music and art? That opportunity is now available starting in January 2025! They will get a weekly lesson with Carmen on Mondays at the Sylvan House of Music from January to June! Why a six month program? Think of it as a unit of study. A progression of learning is best experienced over several sessions. Your child is most likely to retain the information when they're exposed to a learning arc that provides background context, the opportunity to practice, build relationships with peers, and learn from a teacher who can carry them and their interests through to post secondary study.
The first half of Fine Arts Fusion will be dedicated to learning all about music! Students will get to explore their voice and develop basic playing skills on hand drums, piano, ukulele, recorder, xylophone, and a variety of rhythm percussion! Popular classroom resources such as the Kodály Method and MusicPlay will also be utilized. Music games are an integral part of the Kodály method! They teach everything from how to keep a beat to how to read music. Imagine your child coming home with five musical variations on Duck Duck Goose and fresh ideas about what they can do with a basketball!
The second half of Fine Arts Fusion will provide a strong foundation in visual art. We do more than make crafts! Students will discover their inner artist and learn a variety of skills such as how to mix colours using science and paint, create collages, build sculptures, use a variety of drawing materials, discover printmaking, experiment with clay, try different ways to make a picture, and so much more! They will learn about a variety of artists to help inform their creations and will be given plenty of opportunities to explore and experiment.
Please know that when you fill out our registration form, it is important that you include as many details about your child as possible because specific course content will vary depending on the ages, interests, and prior knowledge of the students who are registered. They'll get a customized experience tailored to who they are as a learner, including their skills and personal potential. They'll get feedback specific to their needs!
There will be a snack break and a trip across the street to Centennial Park Playground. Please ensure your child packs a snack, water bottle, indoor shoes, and “weather, movement, and mess appropriate clothing.”
