ALL CLASSES: Located upstairs at the Sylvan House of Music, Sylvan Lake

Printmaking includes a wide range of techniques, many that are accessible to the beginner artist working at home or at our small studio. For each course, you will receive a complimentary sketchbook and unlimited coffee/tea. Working at home between classes will be limited due to the specific supplies that are needed. Printmaking is very process based and you will create several prints in a short time which will demonstrate your progress and development.

These courses will give you a snapshot of the following types of printmaking…

Relief Carving
March 23 & 25
9 am - 12 pm
$100, all materials (and coffee!) supplied

An image is carved into a soft rubber block (wood, linoleum, styrofoam, etc can also be used) and used as a stamp to create paper based wall art, greeting cards, etc.

Silkscreen Printing
April 13 & 15
9 am - 12 pm
$100, all materials (and coffee!) supplied

An image is painted onto a tightly mounted screen with “drawing fluid” and then the remaining area is covered in “screen filler”. When the filler is dry, the drawing fluid is washed out, leaving a stencil of the original painting. Ink is pushed through the screen onto any flat surface and is popular for advertising. Screen printing can be done on wood, fabric, or paper, depending on the type of ink you have.

With Relief Carving and Silkscreen Printing, identical prints can be made from one block/stencil.

Paper Marbling
April 8
9 am - 12 pm
$50, all materials (and coffee!) supplied

Carrageenan is mixed with water to create a solution that is resistant to mixing with acrylic paint. Similar to the behavioural characteristics of oil and water, the acrylic paint remains on the top of the surface. Designs can be created using a variety of tools and then paper is placed on top of the carrageenan bath to lift the acrylic design onto the paper. This method is popular for making book covers, greeting cards, photo matte material for framing, and fabric can also be used to create a variety of wearable art.

Gelli Printing
March 30 & April 1
9 am - 12 pm
$100, all materials (and coffee!) supplied

Somewhat of a blend of other types of printmaking: the block is a soft flexible rubber-like material which holds patterns made with stencils, paint, plants, and other textured materials which are then transferred to paper.

Paper Marbling and Gelli Printing are types of mono printing,
therefore, no two prints are the same.
